Tab Baldwin warns Gilas cadets against complacency in SEA Games

Philippine national men’s basketball team coach Tab Baldwin admitted that complacency may be the one thing that worries him the most when his squad of Gilas Pilipinas cadets plunges into action in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.

The Philippines has won the SEA Games gold in every year the basketball tournament was held since 1991 and the team – composed of some of the finest amateur players in the country and backstopped by naturalized player Marcus Douthit – is expected to run roughshod over the opposition, much like they did in the recently-held SEABA Championships, which they swept with an average winning margin of 68.4 points.

“We never really got tested,” Baldwin told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview. “Singapore, a little bit.”

In the SEABA Championship, they defeated their first four opponents by 56, 87, 62 and 111 points before beating host Singapore by just 26 in their final assignment.

“Since we had it too easy in the SEABA, there’s a tendency to be complacent and that’s the one thing I’ve been telling the players the most,” Baldwin said.

But the veteran international coach, who steered New Zealand to the semifinals of the 2002 FIBA World Championship, believes the cadets are more than ready to deliver in the tournament.

“No question. They’re ready,” Baldwin said. “Perhaps, their biggest opponent at this time is their selves. They just have to play at the highest level possible and try to outdo themselves every game until we win the gold medal.”

The Gilas cadet squad is comprised of Douthit as well as collegiate standouts Kiefer Ravena, Scottie Thompson, Baser Amer, Mac Belo, Kevin Ferrer, Troy Rosario, Glenn Khobuntin, Almon Vosotros, Norbert Torres, Prince Rivero and Jiovani Jalalon.
